Dec. 2001 - Building the Server

Our server was assembled in our own workshops and installed during the 2003 Lent Bumps. It was a short-notice replacement for the previous machine which stopped working (motherboard failure) under the strain of the Bumps instant results service.

The two machines were identical, and home made in December 2001 - below are a few pictures to mark our hard work! Bought online from Watford Electronics for just £204 each (I think we might spend a little bit more on the next one!), here's the specification:

  • AMD Athlon 1.2GHz Processor, fan and heatsink
  • MSI MS-6378 Motherboard, 256Mb SDRAM Memory
  • ATX case and 300W power supply
  • And surviving from the first firstandthird.org machine (a 2nd hand 166 MHz Pentium which ran from Summer 2000 to December 2001) - 4.3Gb disk drive and 2 network cards
