Rowing at University in Cambridge
The college and University Clubs
There are approximately thirty colleges in Cambridge, each of which has its
own boat club. In addition to this, there exists a body called the Cambridge
University Combined Boat Club (CUCBC). This consists of the university clubs:
CUBC (heavyweight men), CULRC (lightweight men) and CUWBC (women). This body
is mainly responsible for managing college rowing on the Cam and running any
university races, such as the Lent and May bumps. The University fields two
heavyweight men's, two heavyweight women's, two lightweight men's and one lightweight
women's crews. They all start with large squads at the beginning of the Michaelmas
term, and slowly whittle down to the final crews over the course of a rigorous
selection procedure, involving a great deal of seat racing and ergo testing.
For all the crews the only race that matters is that against Oxford. This is
the climax of 6 months hard training, and so the pressure and need to win is
immense.
