Lent Term 2008Cambridge Head-2-Head Sat 19th January A timed headrace in two parts, length 2x2600m (reduced to 2x2000m due to river conditions) Early term race practice for many college crews. Head of the Nene Sat 2nd February An important regional 5000m timed head race Several of the top college crews travel to race at Peterborough, for this invariably unpleasant but key race in preparation for the bumps. Newnham Short Course Sat 2nd February A timed head race from the Little Bridge to the Railings (approx 1600m) With several 1st and some 2nd VIIIs racing at Peterborough, only a subset of college crews race. Robinson Head Fri 8th February A timed head race over 2200 - from Little Bridge to Peter's Posts The last timed head race on the Cam before Lents - and a useful form guide with many college boats competing. Bedford Head Sun 10th February A 2000m timed head race on the Great Ouse An event attended by a some Cambridge Colleges. Pembroke Regatta Sat 16th February A side-by-side knock out regatta on the reach, over 1100m An event for college crews run in 3 divisions. For many crews, the last race practice before the bumps, and a popular event. Lent Bumps Getting-on Race Fri 22nd February The 2000m qualifying race for the Lent Bumps The Lent Bumps are the focus of the term for college rowing, but only those boats finishing higher than 10th from the bottom of last year's races are automatically entered. All other crews must compete for the 10 places available. Sparring against CULRC Sat 23rd February A series of variable length side by side races against the university lightweights As CULRC no longer put out a second boat, there is no one for their Blue Boat to spar against, so they invite college crews to race them. Lent Bumps Tue 26th February - Sat 1st March The famous Cambridge University Bumps on the River Cam The focus of the year so far. The Lent Bumps are smaller and less prestigious than the May Bumps, but nevertheless involve 69 men's and 52 women's crews. FaT v BPBC Football Challenge Sat 8th March Annual Club v Alumni football match A game of Association Football between a team selected from the rowers of First and Third Trinity BC, and a team selected from the (former) rowers of Black Prince BC 2nd Trinity Challenge Sculls Tue 11th March A timed sculling race for single and double sculls over a course from Little Bridge to Peter's Posts, run by First and Third. This is an historic event, but recently has been run continously since only 1999. The event is for single sculls, both shell and clinker, as well as double sculls. Cardinal's Regatta Thu 13th March "a regatta unlike any other..." A fun post bumps regatta for mixed crews, with head starts for crews in fancy dress and widescale bribery of marshalls and race officials...! Head of the River Race Sat 15th March A huge head race on the Tideway (tidal river Thames) over the University Boat Race course The largest annual VIIIs head race in the country, attracting most rowing clubs and many University and College crews. The course is 4 1/2 miles, from Mortlake to Putney.
