...THE letter...

Bidwell's Letter

which reads:

Dear Mr. Ingram

It is reassuring to note that, after 5,000 years, the art of pyramid construction is still not lost and that Trinity College is well to the fore in this technology.

Would you please now turn some of your attention to clearing the remainder of your room and, in particular, beer can tops and other rubbish strewn over the carpet.

Yours sincerely

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Some of us are privileged to live in extraordinary times:

Early 15th century: the Renaissance sweeps across Europe, reawakening interest and activity in the arts and 'natural philosophy'

Early 17th century: the first stirrings of the Enlightenment, which culminates in Kant, Newton and Leibniz; the birth of modern science and the rationalist approach to philosophy.

Early 19th century: the Industrial Revolution. First western, ultimately all civilisation is to be fundamentally altered. The new economic basis of this society brings a greater level of prosperity and vastly accelerated technological development to the world.

And now.....

As we approach the 21st century, surely man's greatest achievement is about to be unveiled. Fittingly, it has been formed from two of the greatest advances of the ancient Egyptians - the first truly advanced civilisation - Pyramid building and beer.
