Club Committee
2007-2008 Manifestos
Narelle Baker - Secretary
Who am I?
My name is Narelle and I am a second year PhD student studying
glaciology at Scott Polar Research Institute. I noviced in 2006, rowing
for the second novice women and then with the awesome Lent W3. I have
had an awesome time rowing over the past 2.5 terms and really want to
give something back to the club and to all of you, its members... many
who have become really good friends.
Why secretary?
When I was a little girl I thought that a secretary was similar to a
foreign spy, because why else would she be keeping secrets! Seemed
sensible at the time, although I am not quite sure why it was always a
'she'. Well, I can assure you I can keep secrets, but I also have other
skills that are also very important to the role of secretary. I am very
organised, to the point of blatant perfectionism. This is especially in
relation to bits of paper... which must be filed, filed, filed!!!
(Evidence: I take up more bookshelf space that all the other PhD
students I work with... even the ones just finishing). I can make a
computer work and I can count (Evidence: My PhD is on numerical
modelling... the fact that it is numerical modelling of ice is
irrelevant). I know how to undertake basic accounting (Evidence: The
bank has not taken my cheque book off me yet). I can deal with caterers
and organise functions .... and haggle for good prices (Evidence: I have
run two conferences in the last year, both with catering and dinners...
and I got awesome prices and still have some of the 30 bottles of wine I
swindled out of St. Catherine's College!!). I can also read, write and
speak fluent English (although New Zealand-ish is technically my first
language) (No Evidence).
What will I do if elected?
A damn good job. I will read all 28 pages of the Secretary guide (thanks
Phil !!!) and do my best to make everything happen when it is supposed
to, where it is supposed to... with all the people that are supposed to
be there. I will be organised and nearly always punctual. I will work
together with the other committee members to make the club as awesome as
it has been this year. I will be diplomatic when required, straight up
(kiwi term meaning blatantly honest) all the time and I will maintain a
sense of humour if things go pear shaped. I will also always do my
absolute utmost to steal sausages from Alex and doughnuts from Charley,
Liz and Rachel.
Thanks for reading...
Narelle
