Tom and John - Cambridge University Rowing Message Board: Gossip / Bantur

Message board contents copied 3rd June 2001

Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:42 am
        Hi John.
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:43 am
 Hi Tom
 Sorry I'm late
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:43 am
Is that a reference to your catch or your browser speed?
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:44 am
Well I admit my catch is a bit glacial, and my browser is netscape 4.75 for linux (which sucks) but mainly i was referring to the full minute it took me to get to this page to converse with you.
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:45 am
Such a shame ICQ crashes on my computer. Otherwise we wouldn't have to use this archaic method of conversing.
What time is our outing today?
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:45 am
I'm not sure when our outing is. Are we going for a paddle before we race? Want to go out in a pair without a banksteerer?
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:47 am
Err....I can't find my T-shirt. And Rachael's not here anymore so it'd be no fun. I reckon we should just ditch 2 through 7 anyway (plus cox).
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:48 am
I've got my t-shirt. Maybe you could borrow Will's?
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:48 am
I've asked Simon to come join our conversation
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:48 am
Maybe. Who do you reckon will be first other than us to post to this list?
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:49 am
As I say, I think Simon will.
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:49 am
Oh you idiot; why did you post that? Now my question appears irrelevant.
Maybe we should start a new list (John and Simon and Tom).
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:50 am
 Not to mention irreverant.
Anyway stop typing. I can hear you and you're going to beat me to post and then we'll appear stupid. This is bad.
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:52 am
 sp? irreverent I think?
I did stop typing. You heard that too but didn't change your message. How silly.
Anyway I think if Simon doesn't make it soon the Catz boys may turn up to tell us about their silly wheel, or maybe one of our lower boats will turn up. That would be cool.
 Stop typing yourself!!
Nick  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:53 am
 Who are you two?
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:53 am
 I was writing an email.
Anyway, I'm really interested in Catz and their newly invented "Wheel". What can you use a "Wheel" for. Can you eat one? Is it useful in rowing?
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:54 am
Maybe they're paddle wheels to give them that little bit of extra speed they seem to lack?
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:54 am
 Oh No! Intruder detected!!!
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:55 am
 Um. Foreigner alert.
 We come in peace >
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:55 am
 (Waves white flag)
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:55 am
Was that a reference to me, Tom? I know I'm foreign, but not to this board?
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:56 am
If I meant you, I would have said "dirty American". And I don't trust your spelling any more than your pronunciation.
Does that give you any clues Nick?
Who are you by the way?
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:57 am
I must say the sidewalk / pavement thing is really confusing.
 I bet he's from Catz.
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:58 am
Why? All you need do is walk on it.
Nick, if you're from Catz, please explain about "Wheels" to me. I've never heard of them before.
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:58 am
I wonder how you fit a wheel into a square box?
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:59 am
We ought to run dodgy late night chats through this. It'd be great for making loads of money in an anonymous way (as long as Alex doesn't check his logs).
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 09:59 am
I was going to say, I'm sure Alex is watching this at the moment and laughing, since he knows who we are.
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:00 am
And by logs I don't mean those things in the river he looks out for whilst coxing.
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:00 am
Ah, Simon Case has spotted us! He icq'd!
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:01 am
Why does knowing who we are make us funny?
Maybe I shouldn't have asked that question.
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:01 am
I think this board would be pretty hilarious even if you didn't know who we were.
Anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:01 am
 hmm, my message didn;t appear:-)
john earl and tom rose is you
 *points finger like in lottery*
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:02 am
 Time to go controversial:
 I think......(OK controversial enough).
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:03 am
Is me? Are you? Is you? Are me?
You speak worse than he types.
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:03 am
I think safety should not be a priority on the river. These throwlines are completely crap and a waste of money.
Actually just thought of a use for them: hangings!!! every day at 4!
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:04 am
Why 4? Surely usually 3 is the one to hang?
 Or bow.....
Anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:04 am
 its
 sorry
to early in the morning for typing coherently
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:05 am
Don't you think those guys at 1st & 3rd are really cool?
If I were an attractive female I'd ask them to dinner.
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:05 am
I don't know how you can even imagine being an attractive female Tom. Where do you get your experience from?
ANNE  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:05 am
 bow definalty
Anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:06 am
 well I wouldn't...
 kings are much fitter
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:06 am
 Welcome Anne
What do you think on this issue?
 Does Tom have a clue?
Not John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:06 am
How about towing the crews in M4 down the river. Bow side row, stroke balances the boat while the rest of strokes side run down the bank with the throwline, towing the boat along. They could use bikes and go even quicker, but you'd need bank passes for them
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:06 am
Damn it Anne, you need to coordinate your timing better...
Anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:07 am
 tom is clueless
 but then most strokes are
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:07 am
Actually someone suggested to me yesterday that it would be most effective to use the throwlines to haul boats in after bumps in the lower divisions.. one throwline to bow, one to the cox, and haul them in....
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:07 am
I've subbed into a women's boat before. It was so slow though, I can't imagine it being particularly attractive. Maybe my weight plays a part in that?
Not Tom, neither  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:08 am
How about equipping Bow with a throwline to lob at the crew in front for an easy bump. Surely a piece of safety equipment has to count as an integral part of the structure of the boat?
Anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:09 am
sorry, using linux and netscape and trying to get dressed all at the same time doesn't work
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:09 am
To Anne: okay now we know what you think of 1+3's top VIIIs, what about the FIFTH VIII? Surely they are fitter htan King's?
Anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:10 am
I really am behind the times
does anyone actually know how to use a throwline?
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:10 am
And again to Anne: I hope you've upgraded to netscape 6. It's much nicer.. though a bit slow if you haven't got graphics acceleration (XFree 4 crashes my 3dfx card)
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:10 am
The problem here is that you're trying to do something other than row. Boaties can't. Ever try watching Mr. Darley running? Mr. Ingram playing football? Me (insert verb here)?
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:11 am
Apparently throwlines are for throwing, but no one's tried using them yet. Maybe we should have a test run in M4 today.
Anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:11 am
actually I don;t know which netscape I have!
I never try to do anything but row, 8 outings last week!
Anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:11 am
 plus the GoR
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:11 am
Throw lines are good for drying kit when you hang them out in the drying room. I have lots of wet kit. And only one very crap drying room.
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:12 am
I think I might go to a lecture now.
Hon Sec?  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:12 am
Use of throwlines: You attach them to the handlebars of your bike and then feel much more a part of the new safety-concious boaty community wherever you go.
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:14 am
To Anne: 8 outings??? How many different boat clubs?
And I did the GoR twice. That was fun.
J17  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:14 am
The combination of marshal's bib in yellow and throwline in understated orange is definitely in this season
Anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:14 am
 yes!!!!!!!
tom should get his icq sorted
we should all get a life
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:15 am
To Hon Sec?: how do you attach them to your handlebars. They don't seem to fit on mine very well. And if I ever got the throwline to stay on my handlebars I wouldn't be able to get it off again. Not very useful?
Anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:15 am
 5 with nh1
 3 with nines
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:15 am
You're exciting. I think I had one of those once.
About throw lines: Have you ever actually seen one leave the boathouse? I know they're in there somewhere (I bought them), but I can't imagine them surviving long outside. What would they eat? There's no lard.
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:16 am
To Anne: so how are nines going to do in the HORR? Can they beat last year's performance?
Anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:16 am
actually our oach was very good about carrying one, shame he ried to practice by attempting to throw me in
MCPeck  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:16 am
 Good morning boys.
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:17 am
I heard the only thing that was in this season was lycra.
So here's a controversial question (which has been raised recently in conversation). Pants or no pants? I'm a free and easy man myself.
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:17 am
 Aha!!! MCP inna area!
Anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:17 am
nines are looking quite good, three eights in HoRR, first eight are scary, see there peterborough result
MCPeck  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:17 am
Glad to see we're being as irrelevant as ever.
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:18 am
 Biggadibiggadibong.
Big up 'nuf respeck MC Peck.
 Commin at ya big styleee
Hon Sec?  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:18 am
John: you're missing the point - we become more safe simply by having throwlines. Using them doesn't come into it
Anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:18 am
pants, but matching the colour of the stripes!
MCPeck  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:18 am
anyway, can't stick around to join the usual debate on relative merits of rowing and safety... have to go and make biscuits.
Catherine  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:19 am
 Not working on the website?
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:19 am
To Anne: but are they as scary as Robs' random ringers VIII?
WMM: I need to waste time now which is why I am reading this notice board.
Jonathon  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:19 am
 Hello
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:19 am
Back to pants: I've heard it said that "If you know a man's not wearing any you just have to look". ;-)
Anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:19 am
 wow lots of people
 much go check my p'hole...
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:20 am
WMM: Catherine I am learning to cook!
MCPeck  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:20 am
Rowing is our first priority. There has to be some point to throw lines somewhere....... definitely have to think v. laterally
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:20 am
Catherine and Jon and Martin. Wonderful. How am I ever going to keep up?
The Virus  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:20 am
Why can't we have another women's division in the Lents? There were lots of crews in the GOR!
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:20 am
 How's su-ro going JPD?
MCPeck  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:21 am
It's not me who needs to learn to cook......
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:21 am
MCP, I think the throwline can be destroyed somehow
WMM: is being handed over to Tom
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:21 am
WMM I know exactly what I want to do with our throw lines Miss Aiken, but it would be impolite to say so on this board.
MCPeck  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:21 am
After the ladies efforts yesterday to burn down Whewell's
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:22 am
The Virus: please tell us who you are. We don't know you (kind of like we didn't know Nick a while back). You can't be on the show unless we know you.
Catherine  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:22 am
It's in the wash at the moment. Martin will bring it down to the BH later
MCPeck  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:22 am
It is true, throwlines could be used in all kinds of useful ways.
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:22 am
Is that Virus as in yellow single? If so, do you fancy entering 2nd TCS Clinker division?
The Virus  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:22 am
 You know me
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:23 am
WMM: I wish I'd been there, they're so hot
MCPeck  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:23 am
 Bring what?
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:24 am
WMM I hope she doesn't remember about the (insert embarassing item of clothing here).
The Virus  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:24 am
No contest - I've already won it once
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:25 am
I think if we were going to have another women's division in the lents it would have to have a very very short course. Perhaps the finish could be at Grassy? that could make for really cool pile-ups. The boatmen would love us
Jonathon  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:25 am
 Re: Su-Ro
Somebody used high wind and got 9400 or something. I tried and got 8800, but it's completely random, so he must have had a fluke. And the scoreboard's f***ed up again.
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:26 am
OK, now I know Mr. Virus.
And you would have got away with it if it hadn't been for us pesky 2nd TCS organisers....
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:26 am
I guess Anne has gone now. Is SC still with us?
MCPeck  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:26 am
I can't think of anything that I'm supposed to bringing t.b.h. other than my smoothly toned and powerful body ready to row-over.
The Virus  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:26 am
 Hi Tom
Alex  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:27 am
 Alex joins the conversation late...
Bloody hell! What a lot of messages!
Um, that SuRo game isn't as much fun as the coxes game though!
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:27 am
To Jonathon: no longer Su-Ro champion? Can't last long. You're the Redgrave of Su-Ro. Let's just wait for the Olympics.
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:27 am
According to college, he didn't exist last term. Maybe he does now.
V  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:27 am
 MC: That'll be tricky
MCPeck  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:27 am
I think c.a. has gone too she is not responding.
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:28 am
WMM: Smoothly toned and powerful body trying to get its LEG over.....
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:28 am
Alex, the SuRo game is much more fun than the coxes game. Admittedly requires less skill and has less relation to rowing, but for the violent among us...
Alex  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:28 am
 :)
atadisadvantage  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:28 am
Alex: How do you things like underlining - we need a handbook
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:29 am
WMM: She is playing hard (impossible?) to get
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:29 am
 Who does, Tom?
MCPeck  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:29 am
in my experience the b.h. is not the best place for that.
Jonathon  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:29 am
 Re: 2TCS
Only 1 entry for clinkers so far, but I don't think he has a boat to race in.
Alex  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:29 am
Should we add a fixture to the bumps where you can throw water baloons at the crews in front of your college's?
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:29 am
Is it HTML tags I think it is.
Head  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:30 am
RTT & jw: I still exist. But only in the shadows these days lest I offend the women or LBCs.
V  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:30 am
less relation to rowing. How about none, whatsoever. Admittedaly though, it would be quite amusing to mount a water cannon alongside the usual cannons by the motorway bridge to add a bit of interest to the lower half of each division
Anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:30 am
Hey, I'm back, sadly with a bill from Jl for 529 but never mind
my method on the su-ro game to to try and get the lowest score, I'm on -15000
 btw, tim is my supervisor!
and John, what were you doing in compiler construction lectures?
Alex  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:30 am
OK, this whole formatting thing, I'll save the reference page... hold on a sec!
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:30 am
WMM: I'm on the phone to Lamacroft right now.
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:31 am
MCP has just ICQ'd me to say we should drop his personal life from this board. Let's be civilised, okay?
 (It's just not okay, okay?)
W&HO  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:31 am
Head - you don't wanna do that
Anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:31 am
hmm, I did ask our coach to throw a ballon behind us to fend off any opposition, (not that there will be any!)
Alex  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:31 am
 http://dcbc.dow.cam.ac.uk/cucbc/bbs/board-formatting.html
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:31 am
To Anne: Tom had a lower score!! We left a boat turned round facing the start for four hours during a crew pasta.
Jonathon  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:32 am
 Re: Su-Ro
 15000? Are you sure?
MCPeck  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:32 am
personal life is bad. rowing is good. Rowing is our first priority.
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:32 am
Why stop at water balloons? Surely peanuts are the way forward (spicy chilli ones at that).
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:32 am
It'd have to be a pretty massive balloon to actually have an effect on an VIII... maybe that's the real reason why there's no 8+ division in Su-Ro??
Stupid  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:33 am
 Oh, negative...
Anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:33 am
awwwwww, yup, tim said I didn;t hold the recoord, must work harder on that one
Alex  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:33 am
Rowing over behind us in the Mays for sure :o)
Head  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:34 am
W&HO: I would never actively seek to offend the little darlings. However, they are terribly precious, and I have very big feet for squashing the little petals with.
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:34 am
That's right Jon, negative. Can you get a lower score than us?
I think not, cuz we've already started our su-Ro low-score applet
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:34 am
 OK, last dig.
WMM: I WISH rowing were my first priority. Then I wouldn't need a personal life.
Anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:34 am
sounds like towing with throwlines would be a better idea then
Alex  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:34 am
Anybody know any good live Java chat things that we could put on the site?
MCPeck  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:34 am
 yes, in an ideal world
Alex  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:35 am
Scuba diving beneath the opposition and attaching a chain and anchor to their boat would be quite amusing!
Anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:35 am
 who rowing over behind who
 *confused*
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:35 am
Alex, you're full of it - you're on a downward trajectory and you know it
MCPeck  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:35 am
It would never work in netscape. nothing ever does.
Jonathon  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:35 am
Just testing the marque scrolly HTMLy thingy, but can't remember if it's 2 e's...
V  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:35 am
Noughts and crosses Tom - I'll start
 ___
 _O_
 ___
Anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:36 am
no, but maybe you should write one
 how is your java?
alternatively et tim to waste some more time and write one
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:36 am
Alex: We don't want Java chat! We want to be able to count the number of messages on our board so we know how popular we are!!
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:36 am
 Alex, re. your Hot Javans.
I have already suggested a late night chat area. Live or not, it's sure to get the punters (munters?) in.
Jonathon  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:36 am
D'oh. In the preview it wasn't doing anything, so I changed it and pressed preview again, and it posted :-(. Now I look (more?) stupid.
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:37 am
MCP, it's working in Netscape. Wonder of wonders!!!
Head  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:37 am
Not long now, and we'll have more messages than any other string.
Anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:37 am
 leave netscape alone
Jonathon  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:37 am
Who wants to calculate how many Brads Tom has from this?
Alex  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:38 am

Alex  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:38 am
Anne, I didn't know there was a new CUW website... when did that get there?!
V  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:38 am
And nothing from Magdalene's Finest yet. Almost a shame he's not involved

John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:39 am
It wasn't Tom's idea, it was RichSpencer's. He's the one with the Parr coefficient!

Jonathon  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:41 am

John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:42 am
I'll give you a hint about Jonathon
He's not Glas, but he's nearly as large
 But is 1+3
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:42 am
To Jonathon: we have to keep going for a bit so that our message board will stay largest even after we leave.
Head  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:43 am
Can we all go home now that we've become the biggest? I can't get any bigger otherwise I'll never make race weight.
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:43 am

John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:44 am

With a HRM attachment and a small LCD in case your monitor burns out during lactate sessions
Jonathon  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:45 am
Check the bumps programme, my name is spelt wrong (yes, it IS J-O-N-A-T-H-O-N, as in readathon, or swimathon etc.). Then you'll know may name, boat, position, etc.
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:46 am
Have CUW posted their crews on this fabled website?
Head  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:46 am
Not these days I'm afraid. I'm actually gonna have to lose some pies this time.
Alex  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:46 am

Always trust Tom to propagate misspellings
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:47 am
You would if you ate hall breakfasts; guaranteed to make you chunder. Anyone from LMBC got any spare tickets for their breakfast? Would be greatly appreciated.
Alex  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:47 am
Ah... Ben Scott is at Catz isn't he, that explains that then!
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:48 am
 Which mispeeling?
V  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:48 am
Shall we call it a draw John? Who's for chess?
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:49 am
 Oops sorry wasn't Tom's fault.
 Apparently V did the damage
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:49 am
 Oh, Miss Peeling.
I did not have sexual relations with that woman.
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:49 am
V, I think we should draw. I'm not up for chess though
V  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:50 am
I'd have to take credit for that. Better one letter than two crews though ;->
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:50 am
 I prefer "GO" (64x64 board I think)
 Or maybe battleships?
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:51 am
OK, how long before Graham posts? I guess at 1308.
V  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:51 am
You'd have to talk to Dan Jane about that. He's looking for someone to play with.
 No, not like that.
 Well, maybe
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:52 am
Tom's right actually. Is LMBC prepared to take everyone to breakfast tomorrow morning? No one has bought breakfast tickets, again....
V  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:52 am

John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 10:55 am

Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 11:17 am
I thought Paddington was a bear? And I guess he was an illegal immigrant. Probably not in statu pupillari as far as rowing is concerned anyway, so he'd be no good as a sub.
Ben  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 11:17 am
Well, the CUWBC webbie hasn't officially gone public, but given the number of people asking about crews I thought I'd risk it... call it a public beta test if you like...

I think I will give up trying to be colourful. Gold on grey just doesn't work.
Or maybe Gold is the new grey for this season ?!?
Pyro  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 11:33 am
Jonathon - hasn't posting to this message board clearly become our first priority?!!
Lemon  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 11:34 am

John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:01 pm
 Nope.
Rich  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:02 pm
Jonathon : That's subtle advertising there, I would never have guessed it was not an innocent posting disguised as a subliminal advert for that fine and long standing event of the sporting calender.
Lemon  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:02 pm
It's a beautiful day. Possibly. We'll see what happens in M4, which now beckons.
Sam  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:02 pm
 Wow! 330 posts now.
Cover our spoons  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:03 pm
Given the college origins of nearly everyone on this particular board, surely "Rather be at Oxford" or "Walk on water" would be suitable?
(or a medley of 2nd May VIII hits)
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:03 pm
 Erm..
I went and reread the whole thred (took ages).
As for U2. I think they won "Lamest attempt to associate yourself with rowing" at this year's Kit awards.
 Or was that Jerry Halliwell?
Jonathon  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:04 pm

Rich  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:05 pm
No, I'm sorry, it would be a beautiful day if (a) the sun wash shining (b) it was warm and (c) we could rule out wind, rain and snow from the rest of the week.
Unless of course you are referring to the song.
Pyro  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:05 pm
 Does this work?
Jonathon  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:06 pm
 Yep
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:06 pm
 Errant "a". Sorry.
And I think "In the Lent VIII" (apologies to Village People) is more appropriate for the ears this fine afternoon.
MCPeck  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:06 pm
don't post any flipping photos of me. That would be brutally unfair. And bow of which boat is ill?
Rich  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:06 pm
Depends what it was meant to do?
Munchkin  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:06 pm

Jon  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:09 pm
 Try this one
Though most of us have seen it already
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:09 pm
Just as I suspected, this server doesn't support imaginary JPEGs (you need HTML 84.23 for that, doesn't come out until 2022)
Munchkin  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:09 pm
aha you've got the wrong slash too tom!
MCPeck  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:09 pm
anyone know where I can get a good thermal top for wearing under the gimp top today?
Head  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:09 pm
Tut, tut. Biscuits on race day. No bow and extra pies on board- don't tell me, won't make any difference to your speed!!!!?
Jon  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:10 pm
Anyone know what happened to All Your Base?
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:11 pm
No, 'coz he keeps that in an airtight tin under his bed.
Pyro  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:11 pm
we'll still go as fast as ever Head ;-)
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:11 pm

Jon  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:12 pm
You don't need to go to such effort Tom
Munchkin  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:12 pm

Rich  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:12 pm
 Ace of base,
What was that song about "All that she want's is another baby?" I dunno.
Pyro  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:13 pm
 wrong boat, luckily
Jon  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:13 pm
Ruth, not JW. They've found a sub though, so no worries
MCPeck  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:13 pm
ooo. that was exciting - got a file lock error when I posted that.
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:13 pm
 Stop impersonating me.
Maybe I should go for RTT. Then people would know.
 What are aeroplane engines for?
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:14 pm
 OK, I'm cool.
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:14 pm
And I just had to post mine twice. New hardware req'd methinks. Or simply a proper OS?
Head  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:15 pm
Which supersubs are stepping today? If the 2nd and 3rd VIIIs get first VIII rowers (legally of course), do the first VIII get blues?
MCPeck  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:15 pm
Even so that's a bit of an arse. Have to hope she's better by Sat ;-)
Rich  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:15 pm
 isn't refrigeration wonderful
Jon  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:16 pm
Strange that John's standing next to me and is still able to post to the board. He's clearly better connected than I thought
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:16 pm
I think blues are only allowed to row for the Vet School
Pyro  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:16 pm
It is an arse. Yes, Head, we are replacing our whole crew with the Blue Boat and hoping no one will notice
Jon  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:17 pm
Is that right - have you told Robin?
Head once  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:17 pm
Oi, who is impersonating me in order to get me into more trouble?
Rich  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:17 pm
The miracles of modern technology Jon,
 Telephathic posting
 (And it wasn't me)
Pyro  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:17 pm
I knew it wasn't John. There was a full stop missing
Jonathon  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:17 pm
 It wasn't me that time
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:18 pm
Well, they may as well go and trash another boat. At least this time they'll be training whilst doing it (if you can call 3 strokes into Clare training)
Head  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:18 pm
Well make sure there are no 1 and 3 men watching, then vicious rumours won't get spread back to this den.
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:19 pm
You were Head 3 times I think, Mr. Case?
Head  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:20 pm
I've been head for most of my life I think.
Rich  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:21 pm
Right, I'm off to buy some film so I can make pretty pictures of you all this afternoon.
Don't have too much fun while I am away.
Anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:23 pm
well I went to a lecture, and come back to discover you have been talking about tigers!
I just got one of those pwf message things to tell me that I am a tiger and anyone who has seen my hair will agree!
 Any one in cockroft 4?
Jonathon  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:24 pm
Time for lunch. M4 @ 2pm - just can't wait for another of Neil M's race reports...
Pyro  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:25 pm
 essays don't you mean?!!
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:25 pm
I am back. I am in charge.
All your base are belong to us.
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:26 pm
 Oh no they don't
Pyrp  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:26 pm
 what makes you the boss?
Jon  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:26 pm
He's not here any more. Will the real JW please stand up
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:26 pm
Bow down and pray ye worshipful masses.
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:27 pm
 I'm standing on a chair.
Head  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:27 pm
We worship the ground you tread on, oh Big Basin Way.
Pyro  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:27 pm
I think I should be in charge. I can after all control fire
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:27 pm
 Stand on a table
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:28 pm
And will the one who said 'Oh no you don't' please identify themselves. Impersonating British freak that you are.
Head  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:28 pm
 Pyrp?
Is that bad gas, or a typo?
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:28 pm
 Who said that?
Pyro  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:29 pm
 said what?
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:29 pm
At any rate Pyro you can control itty bitty fires in whewells
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:29 pm
I did. You did. Who knows
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:30 pm
Whoever said 'Who said that?' is also a ••••. He or she is probably British. Almost certainly. And a ••••.
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:30 pm
There are too many Johns on this message board...
Head  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:31 pm
 Ohhhh,
I've got a fun game so we can work out who is who...
 "•••• you"
John  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:31 pm
i think i'll be john too
sk  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:31 pm
 •••• you
sk  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:31 pm
 •••• you
JWE  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:32 pm
You can't be this you impersonators
Alex  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:32 pm
 This could be amusing...
JWE  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:32 pm
Where has Nick gone? He was funny when he posted his one message
Munchkin  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:33 pm
 •••• you...
with me thumb on the table.
sk  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:33 pm
 I
•••  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:34 pm
Alex is there a limit to the number of messages we can put on a single message board on this thing? We're starting to get error messages sometimes
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:35 pm
 I
Alex  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:35 pm
Um, not that I know of, but I don't know if she cannae take it, captain!
Anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:35 pm
I thought I was a sad boatie/compsci, but I think this is conclusive evidendence that I am not!
Head  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:35 pm
 I...
JW  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:36 pm
OK now we are going to move to multiple message boards. I am setting up. Will give info when available
Alex  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:36 pm
For those sad boatie/compsci people, the log file for yesterdays website viewings is 8.2MB long!!
sk  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:36 pm
 no use CUW
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:37 pm
Surely you meant to add an "It's" there sk (apologies to CUW)
JW  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:38 pm
Tom and John v.2 and v.3 are now online, still under Racing. Open up multiple browsers and fire away (not really possible to do more than 2/3 of a msg per minute so this should be fine.)
Alex  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:40 pm
I think it might be the cgi script using all the power! Maybe I need to overclock the bastard up to 600MHz per processor again...
MCPeck  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:41 pm
The multiple message board thing will lead to untold chaos. Perhaps moving whole sale to a new one would be good because this one takes about 10 s to load in this old machine in dept.
Alex  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:42 pm
Or alternatively, we could all use ICQ instead?!?!!
MCPeck  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:43 pm
I think bringing down the downing web server is a much better use of time ;-)
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:43 pm
 This List is Dead.
Long Live the List (Tom and John v.2)
Alex  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:44 pm
RIGHT... let's get those scripting k1dd13z working on www.fistandturd.org :)
anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:44 pm
yes, but that would defeat the point
 icq crashes toms computer
and I haven't figured out how to use icq remotely yet :-(
JW  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:44 pm
Anyone who uses ICQ when they could use the CUCBC message board is soft.
Alex  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:45 pm
That was a joke by the way...
JW  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:46 pm
To Alex: he's upgraded his FTP server and web server. He's got some really crappy perl scripts going so they might be able to get him there.
Tom  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:46 pm
It's mainly because I'm behind a firewall and haven't been bothered to set up the relevant module for ICQ under masquerade yet.
So instead of exiting graciously it moans.
JW  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:47 pm
And I hear there's a hole in openssh.. anyone know about this one?
Mark Morrison  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:48 pm
 Moan and groan, baby...
Alex  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:49 pm
BTW, does this lot amount to a DoS attack by 1st & 3rd?!
JW  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:49 pm
 Who are you, Mark?
Remember this list is shutting down?
JW  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:49 pm
If it's a DoS then it's a pretty crappy one...
Alex  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:49 pm
Oh, and John, the word "JWE" is uncensored now :)
JWE  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:50 pm
 Ah thank you Alex
Alex  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:51 pm
OK, who wrote this Perl for WinNT?? It's only single threaded! It's sitting there on 50% CPU load constantly at the moment!
JW  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:53 pm
 Well who do we blame?
 Perl?
 Windows NT?
 Microsoft's software development suites?
 The script writer?
 Obviously we should blame Bill
Alex  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:53 pm
 Blame Canada
JWE  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:57 pm
 Or Mexico
 Or France, for that matter
Anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 12:59 pm
or back to the rowing thing, blame it on the cox!
Alex  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 01:00 pm
 that's what normally happens....
Anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 01:02 pm
 yup
 :(
 much shouted at cox
Alex  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 01:04 pm
Right, off to the river. Tally ho!
anne  Wednesday, February 28, 2001 - 01:06 pm
 enjoy!
much work to do before meeting later
