Club Races
- General
- This Club shall be called the First and Third Trinity Boat Club.
- Only members of Trinity College, Cambridge ("The College"), shall belong
to the Club. Membership in the Club shall be free to all members of the College.
- The Officers of the Club shall be the Men's Captain, the Ladies' Captain,
the Senior Treasurer, The Secretary, the Kit and Social Secretary, the Junior Treasurer,
the Men's Lower Boats Captain(s), the Ladies' Lower Boats Captain(s), and
such other Officers as may be required.
- The Captain of the Club shall be either the Men's Captain or the Ladies'
Captain.
- The affairs of the Club shall be managed by a Committee consisting of
the Officers of the Club as defined in (3), excepting only the Senior Treasurer.
The Senior Treasurer shall be invited to meetings on financial matters.
- The choice of the crew of every boat representing the Club and the command
and direction of the boat shall be entrusted entirely to the Committee.
- In the absence of a quorum of the Committee, the powers of the Committee
shall be entrusted to the Captain of the Club.
- Election of Officers and New Members
- The officers, excepting the Senior Treasurer, shall be elected annually
in the Easter term at a General Meeting of the Club, from among the Members
of the Club, by single transferable vote and by secret ballot.
- The officers-elect, excepting the Senior Treasurer, shall take office
when the men's Henley crew wins or is knocked out of the regatta in the year
of their election. Should the club not enter the Henley regatta, they shall
take office at its conclusion.
- The Senior Treasurer shall be appointed by the College.
- Any officer wishing to resign shall give notice to that effect to the
Secretary and furnish him with the name of a Member whom he proposes as his
Successor; and the Secretary shall give due notice of the name of such Officer
and his proposed Successor on the Club notice board and the time and place
of an election for that office. The Secretary shall, in like manner, post
names of any other Candidates for Office and their Proposers and Seconders.
- The offices of Men's Lower Boats Captain and of Ladies' Lower Boats Captain
may each be held co-operatively by one or more, but not more than four, Members
of the Club. All other offices may each be held by one Member only. The office of Water Safety Officer may be held concurrently with another office.
- At least two weeks before the meeting for the annual election, the Secretary
shall post a notice stating the time and location at which the election is
to be held. At least three days before the meeting for the annual election,
the Secretary shall post the names and manifestos, and the names of the proposers
and seconders, of each Candidate for office. The names of Candidates running
co-operatively for Lower Boats Captaincies shall be clearly marked.
- For the purpose of elections only, Voting Members of the Men's Club are
those Full Members of the Club who are either First May Colours in Residence
(Men), Henley Colours in Residence (Men), Blues in Residence (Men), or have
rowed or coxed in crews under the direct jurisdiction of the Men's Captain
or Men's Lower Boats Captain during two of the most recent three Terms, inclusive
of the present. One of the Terms used may have been rowed or coxed for CUBC
or CULRC.
- For the purpose of elections only, Voting Members of the Ladies' Club
are those Full Members of the Club who are either First May Colours in Residence
(Women), Henley Colours in Residence (Women), Blues in Residence (Women),
or have rowed or coxed in crews under the direct jurisdiction of the Ladies'
Captain or Ladies' Lower Boats Captain during two of the most recent three
Terms, inclusive of the present. One of the Terms used may have been rowed
or coxed for CUWBC.
- Voting Members of the Club are those Full Members of the Club who are
either First May Colours in Residence, Henley Colours in Residence, Blues
in Residence, or have rowed or coxed in crews under the direct jurisdiction
of the elected Captains during two of the most recent three terms, inclusive
of the present. One of the Terms used may have been rowed or coxed for CUBC,
CULRC, or CUWBC.
- Voting Members of the Men's Club who are present at the election for
the offices of the Men's Captain and Men's Lower Boats Captain shall each
be allowed one vote, and may cast an additional vote for each Proxy which
they may have received.
- Voting Members of the Ladies' Club who are present at the election for
the offices of Ladies' Captain and Ladies' Lower Boats Captain shall each
be allowed one vote, and may cast an additional vote for each Proxy which
they may have received.
- Voting Members of the Club who are present at the election for the offices
of Secretary, Kit and Social Secretary, Junior Treasurer, Coxing Captain and Water Saftety Officer shall each be allowed one
vote, and may cast an additional vote for each Proxy which they may have received.
- The Captain of the Club shall be elected by a majority vote of the Voting
Members present and by secret ballot, from a ballot consisting of the Men's
Captain-elect and the Ladies' Captain-elect.
- Members of the Club who, with sufficient cause, are absent from the annual
elections, may apply to the Secretary at least three days prior to the meeting,
for a Proxy, which they and the Secretary shall sign and date, which shall
state: I, N.N., Member of the First and Third Trinity Boat Club, do hereby
grant the bearer the right to vote "in loco remigantis", provided that I am
absent, at the annual elections to be held on D.D.
- The Secretary shall keep a Membership Book to be signed by all Full Members
of the Club who shall make the following declaration: I, N.N., member of the
First and Third Trinity Boat Club do hereby promise to obey the Rules and
Regulations of the Club, and do acknowledge the authority of the Captain and
Committee in all things concerning the activities of the Club.
- Any member of the College desiring to become a Full Member of the Club
shall notify the Secretary, who shall require him to sign the Membership Book
forthwith.
- At the beginning of each Term an Open General Meeting shall be held which
members of the College desiring to take up rowing may attend. At this meeting
they will be made temporary Members for the duration of Full Term. At any
time during this period they may become Full Members.
- No member of college may row for the Club as a temporary Member for more
than one term.
- Any Member who goes down permanently shall become an Honorary and Permanent
Member of the Club, and the Secretary shall note this status in the Membership
Book.
- Any question regarding the Voting status of any Full Member shall be
decided by the Captain.
- The Committee
- Each Officer of the Club who is a member of the Committee must attend
each meeting of the Committee or deliver an explanation of absence to the
Secretary prior to the meeting.
- When it is impossible to obtain a consensus, and in the presence of a
quorum, the Committee may make decisions by majority vote of those present;
one vote may be cast for each office, except that the office of Water Safety Officer shall not entitle the holder of another office to an additional vote.
- Decisions of the Committee are final unless revoked either by the Committee
or by the whole Club at a General Meeting at a later date.
- The primary responsibilities of Officers are as follows:
- Captain
- to see to the overall morale of the Club
- to undertake such executive action in the absence of a meeting of the
Committee as may be necessary
- to liaise with the Black Prince Association and the College as the sole
representative of the Club
- to liaise with CUCBC and the ARA as the sole representative of the Club
- to ensure that the Club has sufficient equipment that Members may train
and compete successfully, and make whatever purchases are deemed necessary
by the Committee
- to see to the maintenance of the Boathouse, and alert the Boatman, Captain
or Senior Treasurer, as appropriate, of any necessary repairs
- Men's and Ladies' Captain
- to decide the division between 'upper boats' and 'lower boats',
- to select crews from among the Members to represent the Club at races,
- to encourage their respective sections of the Club to perform at the highest
level possible,
- to decide what races their crews shall enter,
- to organise coaching for their crews so as to allow their crews to perform
to their potential;
- Secretary
- to maintain a list of the Members of the Club
- to book venues for all Club activities, including, but not limited to,
Boat Club Dinners and General Meetings
- to undertake all paperwork, including, but not limited to, race entries,
as required by the Captains and Lower Boats Captains of the Club
- to prepare Agendas and Minutes for the Committee as may be necessary,
- to prepare Amendments to these Rules and Regulations for consideration
by the Committee and the Membership
- to see that relevant information about the activities of the Club is distributed
via various readily accessible means
- to take on the responsibilities of the Captain in the event that that
position should fall vacant
- Junior Treasurer
- to arrange termly photograph sessions for crews and the club
- to maintain a sufficient supply of refreshments at the boathouse during
Full Term
- to make provision for the decoration of the boathouse
- to take on the responsibilities of the Secretary in the event that that
position should fall vacant
- Kit and Social Secretary
- to schedule and organise such events as may be necessary to the entertainment,
solidarity, and morale of the Club
- to provide a sufficient supply of appropriate training and racing uniform
on a termly basis
- Lower Boats Captain
- to see to the teaching and training of temporary Members learning to row
for the first time
- to secure coaches for lower boats rowers from within the Club and the
wider rowing community
- to select crews for lower boats
- to decide what races their crews shall enter
- Coxing Captain
- to take personal responsibility for the recruitment of coxes for all sections of the Club
- to see to the morale of coxes within the Club and to organise such social events as are deemed necessary to foster the sense of community between the coxes
- together with the Captains and Lower Boats Captains, to provide an environment in which coxes will enjoy their role and to ensure that they do not feel excluded by their crews
- to arrange coaching for coxes to allow them to perform to their potential
- to pass on to coxes the comments and suggestions of their crews and coaches
- to advise and encourage the coxes
- to assist the Captains and the Lower Boats Captains in selecting coxes for their crews
- to be responsible for the electronic equipment required for coxing and coaching
- to update the coxing guide on the Club's website where necessary and to arrange the printing of hard copies of the guide for novice coxes
- to represent the interests of coxes at both Committee Meetings and General Meetings
- Water Safety Officer
- to maintain the club’s Incident Log Book, as well as report all Reportable Incidents to the Regional Safety Adviser
- to compile the annual Club Safety Audit for submission to the ARA and CUCBC
- to check and, if necessary, restock the First Aid kit at least once in every term
- to ensure that all lifejackets and buoyancy aids are in good working condition
- to report to the Committee on safety issues and ensure that water safety is a permanent agenda item for review by the Committee
- to ensure that the Club is in compliance with the Water Safety Code and generally that the Club maintains the highest reasonable standards of safety.
- The Officers may take on other responsibilities and duties at the discretion
of the Committee
- A quorum of the Committee shall consist in the presence of at least one
Officer from each of at least four Offices, including at least one of the
Captain and Secretary
- Finance
- The Committee shall obtain the approval of the Senior Treasurer before
otherwise involving the Club in significant financial expenditure.
- The Senior Treasurer shall keep the accounts of the Club and shall produce
them for audit by two members annually.
- The rates for rack rent at the Club Boat House shall be determined on
a case-by-case basis, by the Captain and the Senior Treasurer. These charges
shall be reviewed at the start of each Term and collected by the Secretary.
- The Secretary may maintain a separate bank account from which to pay for
such booking of venues, race bills, and transport expenses as accrue during
each Term, and shall provide full accounting of expenditures and income related
to races and transport to the Senior Treasurer at the close of each Term.
- The Junior Treasurer may maintain a separate bank account from which to
pay for refreshments during each Term, and shall provide full accounting of
expenditures and income to the Senior Treasurer at the close of each term.
- Any fines or charges imposed by the Committee must be paid by Members
as requested by the third week of Term following the request.
- The Committee may charge Members of the Club for that part of race bills
not covered by the college, and maintain individual accounts including these
and other expenses which they may incur during Term. The Secretary shall tabulate
these charges for inclusion on College Bills.
- General Meetings
- A General Meeting of the Club shall be held at least once annually during
the Easter Term. Additional General Meetings may be held at the discretion
of the Committee, but not outside of Full Term. The Secretary shall post a
notice of every General Meeting two days previously, and those Members who
absent themselves shall abide by the decision of those present. At least two
days before any Meeting of the Club, the Secretary shall post all motions
to be proposed at the ensuing Meeting.
- The Secretary shall call a General Meeting to take place within three
days of the receipt by him of a written request to do so, such a request being
signed by not less than ten Full Members of the Club, and specifying the business
which it is proposed to bring before the Meeting. Such a Meeting may be called
by placing a notice on the board not less than two days previously.
- All Meetings of the Club are to be held where the Secretary shall appoint.
In all decisions the Captain shall have the casting vote.
- Any General Meeting of the Club shall have power to alter any Rule herein
set out by a two-third majority of those present.
- For a General Meeting, a quorum of the club shall be twenty Full Members.
- Uniform and Colours
- Members of the Club are expected to procure appropriate uniform for training
and racing.
- The Committee may alter the approved uniform at any time, subject to confirmation
at a General Meeting.
- The approved Uniform is as follows:

- Formal club scarf, jet black.
- Dark Blue Blazer.
- Stripy Trousers.
- Straw Boater with a dark blue band.
- Club Scarf, dark blue.
- Club Tie, Blue with Gold stripes.
- Dark blue cap, no crest.
- Cricket Sweater, blue and gold stripes and club crest.
- Club socks, gold.
- Race kit (General)
- All-in-one, dark blue with two gold stripes down the sides, club crest
on the front.
- Lower Boats Zephyrs, blue with gold trim.
- Lower Boats tops, blue with gold trim.
- Stripy tops, White with gold/blue/gold stripes across the middle. "1st
& 3rd Trinity Boat Club" along the arm.
- Dark blue leggings with two gold stripes down the sides.
- Gold socks.
- The approved Colours are as follows:
- University IVs (Men and Women)
- 1st coxed IVs and light IV. Dark blue top with three gold hoops, at Captain's
discretion.
- Fairbairn VIIIs (Men and Women)
- Dark blue top with three gold hoops across the centre.
- Lent VIII (Men)
- As Fairbairns.
- Dark blue blazer, with trim and buttons in tie material.
- Lent VIII (Women)
- As Fairbairns
- Cream blazer with blue and gold striped trim. No club crest on pocket.
- 1st May VIII (Men)
- White zephyr with dark blue trim.
- Field Club socks (Blue with two white bands at the top).
- Dark blue blazer with trim and buttons in dark blue.
- Blue cap with club crest.
- 1st May VIII (Women)
- White zephyr with blue and gold striped trim.
- Field Club socks.
- Cream blazer with blue and gold striped trim. Club crest on pocket.

- White Zephyr with blue and white (striped) trim.

- Henley VIIIs
- Blue and white hooped cap with appropriate May/Lent VIII dress.
- Notes
- Club crest is a lion and three crowns ("cat and buns").
- Tops are either vests or sweat tops.
- It is traditional not to wear colours until the corresponding race or races.
- Race kit may not carry the name of any club sponsor.
- General training kit may be obtained from Ryder & Amies or A. E. Clothier
in Cambridge.
- Race kit and other items may be obtained from or as directed by the Vice
President.
- Trophies and Fines
- Fines for inappropriate actions may be imposed at the discretion of the
Committee at an appropriate scale to the offence.
- Oars, sculls and rudders etc., when awarded, may be obtained from the
Club if available.
- Members purchasing oars etc. from the Club shall make their payment to
the Junior Treasurer, and obtain a receipt from him before collection from
the Boatman.
- The Club shall pay the cost of One Prow for presentation to a coach of
any crew which:-
- is head of the May Races.
- wins the University Fours.
- wins any event at Henley Royal Regatta.
- College blades shall be awarded at the Captain's discretion, but generally
to crews which go up four or more places, bump on three or more occasions,
and are not bumped, in a given term.
- Any crew which earns the right to University blades in the Lents or Mays
may emblazon them with the University crest.
- The right to University blades will be awarded to winners of the Light
Fours, the Coxed Fours, the Colquhoun Sculls, the Magdalene Pairs, the Fairbairn
Junior Sculls, the Foster-Fairbairn Trial Pairs, the Lowe Double Sculls,
the Bushe-Fox Sculls, and the Delafield Sculls.
- The right to College blades with College and Jesus College crests will
be awarded to crews which win the Fairbairns Men's First or Second VIII, the
Women's First or Lower VIII, or the Women's IV divisions.
- Club Races
- The organisation and awarding of prizes for Club Races shall be at the
sole discretion of the Committee.
- Second Trinity Head of the River Sculling Race
- That this be a time Race, rowed as a Head of the River Race. That there
be three divisions, men's shell, women's shell, and clinker, and that each
boat abides by its own accidents.
- That this race take place annually in the Lent Term, and that the course
be from the Little Bridge to Peter's Posts.
- That it be open to all members of the CUCBC who have not won them previously.
That the entry fee be five pounds, and that members of First and Third Trinity
Boat Club be allowed to enter free of charge.
- That the winner be allowed to hold the cup for the duration of one year,
and that he then return it to the Captain of the Club. That the winner of
the clinker sculls division be presented with the Clinker Sculls Cup for the
duration of one year, and that they then return it to the Captain of the Club.
That the winner of the women's shells division be presented with a Trophy.
- Novices Sculls
- That these races be rowed annually on a date to be fixed by the Committee.
- That this be a time race rowed in whiff. That the course be from the stump
to Morley's Holt.
- Macnaghten Sculls
- That this be a time race to be decided in heats. That in each heat the
competitors draw lots for stations, and that they be started by the Captain
of the Club or his deputy. That the competitors start one hundred yards apart.
That each boat abides by its own accidents.
- That these races take place annually in the Michaelmas Term (at least
ten days before the Colquhoun Sculls). That the course be as for the Colquhoun
Sculls.
- That they be open to all Members of the Club who have not previously won
either them of the Colquhoun Sculls.
- That the winner be allowed to hold the Cup for the duration of one year,
and that he then return it to the Captain of the Club.
- That the winner may enter for the Colquhoun Sculls, and that his entrance
be paid for by the Club.
- Wyatt Pairs
- That these races take place annually on a date to be fixed by the Committee.
- That the time posts be one hundred yards apart, and that the course be
the same as for the Macnaghten Sculls.
- That they be open to all Members of the Club who have not previously won
either them of the Magdalene Pairs.
- That the Oars be returned to the Captain of the Club at least a week before
the date fixed for the following Races
- That the winning pair may enter for the Magdalene Pairs and that their
entrance fee be paid by the Club.
