An encouraging result. We raced as a scratch crew with almost all of the crew racing in 4s a hour earlier, so we were not expecting the perfect row. The row itself was a little scrappy, but showed good promise, with good send through the finish. I'm looking forward to seeing what gains in speed we can make over the next two weeks as we start training in the 8 properly, having spent most of the preceding term doing a lot of 4s work. (Matthew)

This was a good race in a scratch four. Had a nice rhythm down First Post, lost it a bit coming down Plough Reach, and then dug deep coming down the reach to move strongly up on the other four, and keep the Kings' College London four behind on station. Nice send and timing meant that technique was good coming into the eight later in the day (although the only photo we have of this race would suggest otherwise...).

Marshalling down at the lock is always fun as well - this time we were rewarded by a display of performance anxiety from our esteemed captain (see photos).

2nd men's IV, Student IVs

8th in Student IVs
Time: 10:27
Having done seat racing the day before, and finding some fairly significant speed disparities (~20s over 1k) between my stroke-side and bow-side it was decided that it would make sense to swap the sides of 3 people in this 4 for this race (in the best tradition of the coxless 4). Given this change it was a pretty decent row, but we probably could have gone a lot faster if we had had a chance to train in this combination, or on the relevant sides! (Matthew)

A very promising first race for NW1.
Despite cold conditions and a lack of kit at the start, they warmed up nicely through the race.
They kept their composure and timing throughout the length of the race, aided well by Emily's pertinent calls.
They dealt well when overtaking Christ's around Ditton and didn't lose focus. Emily coped well with the tricky steering round the corners, despite a usually ineffective boat.
Into the head wind on the reach, they sat tall and worked well to push off the crew behind.
They were still together as they crossed the line, which couldn't be said for most of the crews around them.
Overall a very good result as the 2nd college VIII in the category.
